"In 1878 he went to Grimes County, Texas, and after one year went to Bonham Texas, where he was employed for two years, part of the time in raising cotton, and the balance of the time in teaching school. In the Fall of 1880 he returned to Tennessee, and was a student for two years in Brownhill Academy. On Thanksgiving day, 1882 he started for Oregon, but stopped off in Texas where he taught school for three months. He then continued his journey as far as Los Angeles, where he spent six weeks with an Uncle. From there he went to San Francisco and then to Portland, and in June 1883, arrived in Pendleton.
