    "He crossed the continent with his parents in 1871, and the family located near what is now the city of Athena, in Umatilla county, Oregon, where his father engaged in the sheep business. Mercantile life, however, had greater attractions for the younger man, and he soon secured a clerkship in Walla Walla, Washington, later removing to Weston, Oregon, where he became manager of the large general merchandise store of Saling & Reese, one of the pioneer concerns of Eastern Oregon."     "In 1878 he went to Grimes County, Texas, and after one year went to Bonham Texas, where he was employed for two years, part of the time in raising cotton, and the balance of the time in teaching school. In the Fall of 1880 he returned to Tennessee, and was a student for two years in Brownhill Academy. On Thanksgiving day, 1882 he started for Oregon, but stopped off in Texas where he taught school for three months. He then continued his journey as far as Los Angeles, where he spent six weeks with an Uncle. From there he went to San Francisco and then to Portland, and in June 1883, arrived in Pendleton. (Centennial History of Oregon, p.367)

    "William P. Sturgis lived at West Gorham, from which place he moved to Walla Walla, Washington. He married Susan, daughter of James and Hannah Cressey of Buxton." (History of Gorham, ME, 1903)

    Susan M., born 1820, married in 1843 William P. Sturgis, Gorham. He was a fox hunter, trapper, blacksmith and farmer, was Corporal in Company K, 9th Regiment, Maine Infantry, wounded in action and taken to hospital in Civil War. In 1871 they moved to Walla Walla, Washington, where he was engaged in sheep raising. They both died in 1902 at 84 and 84. (http://lrcressy.com/family/fam-tree/0287.html)

    According to Cy Sturgis III, William, Susan, and Sam Sturgis took a ship to Panama, rode a train across the isthmus, and took another ship to Washington.
